The Karoo Donkey Sanctuary
The Karoo Donkey Sanctuary is a registered Animal Welfare NPO located on a private farm, two kilometers outside the picturesque village of Prince Albert. Following their historic rescue of 236 donkeys and 30 horses, all destined for slaughter at the infamous Hartswater auction that took place in January 2017, by virtue of their numbers, they are recognized as being the largest donkey rescue centre and sanctuary in Africa.
With the current global donkey population estimated at 44 million and with an estimated 10 million donkeys being slaughtered per year to supply the Chinese demand for their skins, this rush has created a global donkey holocaust. Prior to the mega herd rescue at Hartswater, the majority of their original rescues came from dire circumstances of being over-worked, abused and malnourished as former beasts of burden in the cart-horse industry. Karoo Donkey Sanctuary is all about rehabilitation, rehoming and raising awareness to the unsustainable, inhumane and barbaric donkey skins trade.
With a vision to invest profits back into a social cause Victoria Gin partnered with the Karoo Donkey Sanctuary in Prince Albert. A portion of every bottle sold is donated to the immersive rehabilitation initiative of the Karoo Donkey Sanctuary. A project we feel very passionate about.
